The Winterage Weekend takes place on the October Bank Holiday weekend each year, offering a chance for us all to come together and celebrate the unique farming traditions of the Burren and other ‘high nature value’ farming landscapes across Ireland and Europe.

BOOK READING -  ‘LAY OF THE LAND’  

3pm-4pm, Lisdoonvarna Public Library  

Fiona O’Connell reads from ‘Lay of the Land’, her collected articles from her weekly column in The Sunday Independent, on conservation, animal rights, history, folklore, biography and the natural world. "Reading 'Lay of the Land' is like opening a beautiful bundle of love letters to nature - and human nature" - Marty Morrissey.  The book will be on sale for €12.99.

BOOK READING  - ‘THE COW BOOK’

5pm-6pm, Lisdoonvarna Public Library

John Connell, author of ‘The Cow Book’, talks about his experience as a returned emigrant on the family farm in Longford. ‘A meditation on the real meaning of home and place’ – The Irish Times. The book will be on sale for €15.

FILM SCREENINGS - FARMING FOR NATURE ACROSS IRELAND

6.30pm-8pm, The Burren Centre, Kilfenora 

Screening of a series of 10 short films on ‘Farming for Nature’ across Ireland

NORTH CLARE  TRADITIONAL MUSIC 

9pm – 12pm, Lisdoonvarna Roadside Tavern. 

Celebration of the life and music of trad musician Micilin Conlon.  A feast of trad led by North Clare musicians.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 26TH

 

HERDSMAN’S WALK, GLANQUIN

9:30am-11:30am, near Kilnaboy Glanquin Farmhouse. Location here.

Walk the Burren hills with farmer-poet Patrick McCormack. A challenging hike on rough and steep terrain. A fundraiser for the Burrenbeo Trust, with tea and scones at Glanquin House (aka Fr Ted’s House). Footwear and clothing for wet, blustery weather is essential.

ADM: €20 for Burrenbeo members, €30 for non-members.

HERDSMAN’S WALK, DOOLIN CLIFFS

11am- 3pm, along Doolin sea cliffs. Meet at Gus O'Connor's pub, Doolin. Location here.

Join Pat Sweeney, farmer, local historian and walking enthusiast, on a guided walk along the spectacular sea cliffs of Doolin. A challenging 9 km hike on uneven terrain. Footwear and clothing for wet, blustery weather is essential. A fundraiser for the Burrenbeo Trust.

ADM: €8 for Burrenbeo members, €10 for non-members, €5 for bus ride back to the starting location.

BURREN FOOD FAYRE - FAMILY DAY

10am-5pm, Lisdoonvarna Burren Smokehouse  

Family Open Day at ‘Brádan – The Story of Irish Atlantic Salmon’, the new interpretive centre at the Burren Smokehouse. Information at burren.ie

Join Pat Dowling, John Hehir and friends for a guided walk to discover Lisdoonvarna's  hidden gems. Open admission.

DOOLIN HERITAGE WALK

2-4pm, Starting from Hotel Doolin

Explore the culture, history and archaeology of Doolin with Mattie Shannon and Micheál Shannon. Open admission.

CHILDREN’S ART & NATURE WORKSHOP AND WINTERAGE ART AWARD

 ‘Wildlife around the Farm’ – an art workshop with environmentalist Gordon D’Arcy.

Display of children’s art and awards.

Launch of the ‘Burren Dinners’ book, a collaboration between Burren Food Trail members and author-chef Trevis Gleason. Information at burren.ie

SUNDAY OCTOBER 27TH

BURREN FOOD FAYRE

11am-5pm, Lisdoonvarna Pavilion  

Local producers display produce from the Burren region. Foraging walks, upcycling workshops, food and craft stalls, vegetarian street food, cooking demos, outdoor food trucks, and live music. Information at burren.ie

COOLE MUSIC WINTERAGE CONCERT

11am-12pm, Carron church

Classical music as you’ve never seen it! Local teen orchestra Sonic Strings team up with their Swedish friends DalaViolinisterna for some exciting tunes to kick off the Burren Winterage Cattle Drive.

ADM: Free – donations to the Burrenbeo Trust welcome!

 

BURREN WINTERAGE CATTLE DRIVE

12:30pm-3pm, Carron. Registration from 11:30am at Carron school.

Accompany a local farming family as they lead their cattle to winter grazing for another year, reliving an authentic local tradition. WARNING: NO DOGS ALLOWED. Wear suitable walking shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather. From 11:30am, registration and refreshments - please bring your own mug. For your safety only walkers wearing suitable footwear and clothing will be admitted.

ADM:  Donation of €10/€5 to the Burrenbeo Trust.

BURREN PERFUMERY WORKSHOP

3pm- 4.30pm,Burren Perfumery, Carron   

Exploring the scents and smells of Autumn in the Burren with Sadie Chowen.

A workshop where you will create a personal autumnal bath oil blend to take home. 

 €20 for non-members, €15 for Burrenbeo members.

All fees go to the Burrenbeo Trust as a donation.

The Burren Winterage Festival is coordinated by the landscape charity Burrenbeo Trust with support from the Burren Programme, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, The Heritage Council and FBD Insurance. Burrenbeo Trust is a non-profit organisation that relies on support from the local community and various organisations to carry out its work.  The Trust is hugely grateful for all its supporters.
